I understand the challenges many people face when learning to sew or quilt or to learn how to fix it for sewing machines. While I spend many hours each week repairing sewing machines and assisting customers with their questions in our Sew And Quilt Stores, it has not always been this way.

My wife Donna, has taught me a great deal about sewing. When we first met, she was the campus sewing expert doing her alterations business out of her dorm room. At the time, I knew nothing about sewing, but over the years sewing has become a integral part of our lives.

My education has included a B.A.; M.Ed.; and D.Min. with a broad range of studies in education, ministry, and management.

As a small church minister , money was always scarce. So, I helped Donna with her sewing ventures. We have done just about every kind of sewing you can imagine. From original costume design for professional wrestlers and Revolutionary War reenactment troops to alterations, custom clothing construction, draperies, window coverings, home décor, quilting… we have worked together.

In 1992, we started advertising sewing services to the local community from our home (opening a store in 1993). Surprisingly, about every fourth call was for sewing machine repair not custom sewing, draperies, or alterations. I had cleaned our machines over the years, but I was no expert. So, I began to look for a school, training center, book, something or somewhere I might learn to repair sewing machines. I thought certainly there would be a basic course offered at the Junior College, or a regional training program from one of the major sewing machine companies. Nope!

After a lot of searching, I found bits and pieces. Allyn International is the company in the United States that markets the Necchi line of sewing machines. They agreed to permit me to come and spend a few days with their national repair supervisor. He taught be a bunch, but a few days was not enough when there were thousands of different sewing machine models. I collected a bunch of old old sewing machine repair books, and got repair manuals on many of the more common machines. I studied hard, but still lacked confidence.

I started accepting sewing machines for repair at my shop (in my garage). I would painstakingly read the repair manual as I serviced each machine. Still, once in a while, I got stumped. I found a local repairman Mr. Stephen Weathers (now my business partner), who worked out of a store about thirty miles away. I would take my problem machines, pack them up in the car, and drive to Steve’s shop. I asked lots of questions and watched him diagnose and repair. Over the years, I have been privileged to take in hundreds of hours of technical training on Singers, Necchis, Berninas, Brothers, and Baby Lock sewing machines. That is how I became a sewing machine technician.

Donna and I opened a sewing store in our town. While our town was small, we had no competition. We offered a full array of sewing products, fabrics, and services. Custom sewing and alterations paid the bills. Sewing machine repair generated income. Sales of product produced the gravy.

In 2000, we merged our local sewing store with a small chain of Sew And Quilt Stores here in central Texas. Since then, I have worked in almost every aspect of the business including sales, repair, teaching, accounting, and management.
